Today I rode with Eddy Merckx and I scored lunch with Vacansoleil – DCM (who just gained the UCI license in 2011). I regret saying the Rest Day was going to be a halt in the TDU! Greg, some Melbourne mates and I ran into Eddy at the corner of Greenhill Road and Anzac Highway. Then later, I was at Osteria on Glen Osmond Road a Spanish restaurant. Outside the restaurant where 20 Bianchi Oltre, with one sitting in the chef’s window. This pro team knows how to enjoy themselves!
It all started at the traffic lights of Greenhill Road and Anzac Highway around 7:45am…
Eddy: /Pointing at Lightweight Wheels.”Those wheels are cheap aren’t they.”
Greg: /ahaha “Yes very cheap.”
/lights go green. Eddy rides off.
Greg: “Hang on, that was Eddy Merckx!”
We joined the pack of the small group of 10-15 riders and rode along with Eddy Merckx and Patrick Jonker (2004 TDU Overall Winner). Life complete. We followed them all the way to Glenelg but parted ways. I wish I had taken a photo but I wasn’t too keen to pull out my phone mid-ride and snap one! At least we can say we rode with Eddy Merckx if people believe us. Good start to the rest day.
More riding… Then lunch!
Now I will admit I didn’t eat with them but I was in the same restaurant because my brother works there and told me about a cycling team (he didn’t know who) booked in for lunch. So he booked me in too! Osteria has awesome food and looking at the cyclists all together eating makes you want to be one! Not to much I can say about watching men eat pasta – but I did get my Rapha cap (donated to me by Greg) signed!
Tomorrow the action starts! Santos Tour Down Under Stage 1 – Prospect Road 11:00am.
